TOEFL iBT exam pattern after the 2026 update
The current TOEFL iBT still tests four academic English skills, but ETS introduced updated tasks and scoring from 21 January 2026. The test takes about two hours, excluding directions, and the exact item count or timing can vary because parts of the test may adapt.
| Section | Approx. base time | Current task focus |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | About 30 minutes | Complete words, read daily-life material and academic passages |
| Listening | About 29 minutes | Responses, conversations, announcements and academic talks |
| Writing | About 23 minutes | Sentence building, email writing and academic discussion |
| Speaking | About 8 minutes | Listen-and-repeat and interview-style speaking tasks |
TOEFL 1–6 scoring and the 0–120 transition
For tests taken on or after 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT reports Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing scores on a 1–6 scale in 0.5 increments. The overall score is based on the average of the four section scores and is rounded to the nearest half band.
During the two-year transition period after the 2026 scoring change, ETS also provides a comparable overall score on the familiar 0–120 scale. This matters because universities are updating their published requirements at different times and some may still display a 0–120 threshold.
| Example older requirement | ETS recommended new-scale reference |
|---|---|
| 100 | About 5 |
| 90 | About 4.5 |
| 80 | About 4 |
| 70 | About 3.5 |
