ACT international status for students in India
ACT is a college-admissions test commonly associated with undergraduate applications, especially in the United States. Students testing outside the US use ACT's international registration system. ACT rolled the enhanced content into international testing beginning in February 2026, so preparation should match the current enhanced test rather than older full-length formats.
Current enhanced ACT pattern
The enhanced ACT gives students more time per question and reduces the number of questions in the core sections. English, Math and Reading form the core used for the Composite Score. Science is optional for international students; students who take it receive a Science score and, when applicable, a STEM score. Writing is also an optional add-on where offered and required by the student's plans.
| Section | Questions | Standard time |
|---|---|---|
| English | 50 | 35 minutes |
| Math | 45 | 50 minutes |
| Reading | 36 | 40 minutes |
| Science (optional) | 40 | 40 minutes |
| Writing (optional where selected) | 1 essay | 40 minutes |
ACT scores and how colleges use them
The ACT Composite Score remains on the 1–36 scale. English, Math and Reading receive section scores, and students who take Science receive a Science section score. Colleges set their own testing policies and score expectations; some are test-optional, some consider ACT or SAT scores if submitted, and policies can change by admission cycle.
ACT registration, test dates and fees in India
International candidates must register online through ACT. During registration, choose Outside the US and use the live system to view countries, test centres, dates and current charges. Availability is centre-specific, so a date published for US national testing is not automatically an available date in India.
- Create a MyACT accountUse accurate personal information and review the international ID and photo requirements.
- Choose Outside the USThis routes you to the international testing flow rather than the US national schedule.
- Check India centres and datesSelect only an appointment that the live portal actually offers for your country and preferred centre.
- Review the live fee before paymentInternational charges and add-on services can change. Treat the amount shown by ACT during registration as authoritative.
ACT preparation and comparison
- Decide whether ACT or SAT better fits the universities you plan to apply to; many institutions accept either where testing is considered.
- Prepare using materials aligned to the enhanced ACT question counts and timing.
- Focus on English, Math and Reading because they determine the Composite Score.
- Take Science if it benefits your intended programme or application strategy and if the test option is available to you.
- Leave enough time for score reporting and a possible retake before application deadlines.
- Recheck the live international centre, ID, device/test-centre and cancellation rules before test day.
Sources & verification
International format, Composite Score changes and registration rules were checked against ACT's current non-US pages. ACT says not every country or test centre is scheduled for every date, so StudyDesk does not present US national dates as guaranteed India dates; candidates should use the live international registration portal for India availability and current fees.
Frequently asked questions
Can students in India take the ACT?
International students can use ACT's non-US registration system, but actual India test-centre and date availability must be checked in the live portal because not every centre runs every date.
What is the ACT score range?
The ACT Composite Score remains on a 1–36 scale and is calculated from English, Math and Reading in the enhanced format.
Is Science compulsory on the international ACT?
No. ACT's current international enhancements make Science optional. Students who take it receive a Science score and can also receive a STEM score when applicable.
