Official document status as checked 9 October 2026
The JEE Main official information-bulletin page currently lists a document titled IB 2026, and the available syllabus page also references 2026. A future 2027 bulletin should be treated as the authority for the 2027 examination, even if publishers anticipate similar patterns.
What the official 2026 NTA pattern actually says
For 2026 Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.), the NTA public notice listed three subjects—Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject had 20 Section A multiple-choice questions and five Section B numerical-value questions, giving a total of 75 questions across the paper. Section B had no optional choice of five out of ten in that notice.
| Subject | Section A | Section B | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 20 MCQs | 5 numerical | 25 |
| Chemistry | 20 MCQs | 5 numerical | 25 |
| Mathematics | 20 MCQs | 5 numerical | 25 |
| All three subjects | 60 MCQs | 15 numerical | 75 |
The 2026 NTA notice says there was negative marking in both sections. Do not infer any future change or continuation without the applicable 2027 bulletin. Older optional-question layouts should not be treated as the 2026 format.
How to prepare while the 2027 syllabus is awaited
- Open NTA’s most recent officially available JEE Main syllabus and identify the chapters you have completed.
- Maintain separate revision lists for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and practise questions from official past papers.
- Use the NTA portal to confirm the 2027 syllabus, numeric-answer rules, subject mapping and any deleted or added topics when published.
- Treat private coaching topic-weightage claims as analysis of earlier papers, not an official guaranteed chapter distribution.
- Do not act on an unofficial registration link or pay a third party before NTA opens its real application portal.

Five checks when 2027 documentation appears
- Match the bulletin year and notice date to JEE Main 2027 rather than a 2026 PDF.
- Check paper and language options, eligibility, approved identity documents and exam-city instructions.
- Record the actual application start, correction window and payment cutoff.
- Verify subject-specific Section A and Section B question instructions.
- Keep a copy of the official downloadable bulletin, and monitor notices for amendments.
